Home Building Department
The Building division administers the permitting of residential and commercial construction within the community in conformance with the International state adopted codes, Building, Plumbing, Mechanical, Energy conservation, Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities, Existing Building, the National Electrical codes and State Statutes pertaining to Building Codes.
The purpose of this code is to establish the minimum requirements to safe guard the public health, safety and general welfare through structural strength, means of egress facilities, stabilities, sanitation, adequate light and ventilation, and energy conservation, and safety to life and property from fire and other hazards attributed to the built environment and to provide safety to fire fighters and emergency responders during emergency operations.
New building construction and/or alteration or repair of an existing building requires a building, mechanical, plumbing or electrical permit. In accordance with the State of Connecticut International Building Codes and State adopted Amendments.
A building permit is required when the intent is to construct, enlarge, alter, repair, move, demolish, or change the occupancy of a building or structure. Or to erect, install, enlarge, alter, repair, remove, convert or replace any electrical, gas, mechanical, or plumbing system, the installation of which is regulated by this code, or cause any work to be done, shall first make application to the building Official and obtain the required permits.
Time limitation of application.
An application for a permit for any proposed work shall be deemed to have been abandoned 180 days after the date of filing, unless such application has been pursued in good faith.
